Chebacco Author Talk: One Nation, Under Fraud: The Penobscot Remonstrance and the Fight for Sovereignty

  • Jesup Memorial Library 34 Mount Desert Street Bar Harbor, ME, 04609 (map)

Join us for a panel discussion presented in partnership with the MDI Historical Society and Jesup Memorial Library, featuring Hon. Eric M. Mehnert, Hon. Donna M. Loring, and Joseph G.E. Gousse, Esq. This event, based on Donna Loring’s article in the 2026 edition of Chebacco, examines Maine’s legal relationship with the Wabanaki Nations through historical records and significant court cases, highlighting the impact of law on Wabanaki sovereignty. The panel will discuss the concept of “genocide by jurisprudence” and its lasting effects.

Following the discussion, attendees can move next door to explore the exhibit In the Shadow of the Eagle at the Abbe Museum, co-curated by Donna Loring, which highlights Wabanaki self-governance and the struggle for sovereignty.

This program will be held in-person and online via Zoom.
