About Planned Giving
In addition to giving cash and securities that support the Abbe Museum, a growing number of supporters are choosing to make planned gifts that ensure our future.
There are many ways to give a planned gift, and many reasons for giving. Some of our donors want to provide support for a particular area—decolonization, contemporary Wabanaki arts, collections, or education programs for example. Others believe that the Abbe should have the flexibility to develop projects in response to emerging opportunities. Planned gifts ensure our ability to continue to create and deliver educational and engaging programs that serve the community. There are many creative and flexible planned giving options that can benefit you and the Museum.
The 1928 Society
The 1928 Society recognizes and honors those that make planned gifts to the museum. 1928 Society members will be recognized in our annual report, the museum’s communications, and will receive special invitations to functions hosted by the Abbe Board and staff. There are many ways to make a planned gift:
Beneficiary Designation
The Abbe can be designated as a beneficiary through a life insurance policy or retirement plan. If you are at least 70 ½ years of age, you may make a transfer from your IRA to the Abbe today, to count as a part of the required minimum IRA distribution
Bequest
The Abbe Museum can be named as a beneficiary through a will or an amendment to a will. A bequest to the Abbe may take the form of a specific dollar amount, a property asset, or a percentage of your estate. Please view the Recommended Language for Naming a Beneficiary. Also, note that the legal name for the Museum is "Robert Abbe Museum of Stone Age Antiquities."
Charitable Gift Annuity
A Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) allows donors to transfer assets (stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit, or cash donations) in exchange for guaranteed income for life. Donating through a gift annuity allows you to:
Receive an immediate tax deduction for part of your gift.
Realize additional tax savings, because a portion of each of your guaranteed payments is considered a nontaxable return on your investment.
Blended Gift
By accompanying your planned gift with a contribution today, blended gifts can provide near term and future benefits for the museum, while also helping to ensure long-term financial security for you and your loved ones.
Other Planned Gifts
The Abbe Museum can be the recipient of other types of gifts, such as real estate, or gifts of stock, or securities. If you designate the Abbe Museum to receive real estate, please state in your will that the property is to be sold through your estate and the Abbe is to receive the proceeds from its sale. Please contact our advancement office to discuss gifts of stock or securities.
