- 1. Distribute a copy
of “Artifacts From Site 702.71”
activity sheet to each group of students.
- 2. Have the students
imagine they are archaeologists who have
found a site that may be from the Contact
Period (1500-1750, when Europeans began
settling here). What questions might they
ask about what happened in the past at this
site?
- 3. Ask the students to
cut out the artifacts on the activity sheet
and classify the objects to answer their
questions. (For example, if a group’s
question is: “What different kinds
of materials did people use at this site?”
then they would classify their objects based
on types of material - a group of bone objects,
metal objects, etc.
- 4. See how many different
research questions can be asked and answered
in this way. Ask the class to summarize
why classification is a useful tool for
studying people from the past.
