This watercolor and tissue paper collage is by Felicia Thornton, Passamaquoddy. Thornton is in Grade 8, Indian Township School.
This annual exhibition showcases a variety of artwork by young Penobscot and Passamaquoddy students from early childhood education through the eighth grade, as well as a number of pieces created by Penobscot and Passamaquoddy high school students.
Now in its seventh year, the exhibition represents a successful collaboration between the Abbe Museum and Maine Indian Education. It demonstrates a strong, continuing partnership of two institutions devoted to promoting art education and Waponahki culture, and it is central to the mission and programming of both the Abbe Museum and Maine Indian Education.
The Maine Indian Education School System is comprised of Beatrice Rafferty School at Pleasant Point, Indian Island School on Indian Island, and Indian Township School at Peter Dana Point. Under the direction of MIE Curriculum Coordinator Beth Clifford, the exhibition gives students a special opportunity to share personal expressions and interpretations of their culture with the public.
