A work in progress...

Saturday, February 13
(Snow Date February 20)
10:30-11:30
Watie Akins, a Penobscot Elder will be demonstrating "Walade hamagan" Dish Game, a traditional game using bone or antler dice, a wood bowl, and wood scoring sticks. Watie is one of the few remaining Wabanaki people who know how to play this game. He will be demonstrating and teaching people the art of playing. The game is played in three stages and Watie will demonstrate the essentials of each stage before moving on to the next. Watie believes the game has an important spiritual connection when using natural materials and the more attention to detail you give making the game pieces, the greater success you will have in the game.
Children will be able to make their own version of the game and take home instructions to help them play the game with their family and friends. The demonstration is also being filmed to preserve the knowledge and rules of the game for the future. For more information please contact Raney Bench at 288-3519.
