The Abbe Museum's Archaeology Field School
abbe museum
2005 Abbe Museum dig.

Join Abbe Museum archaeologists at a site in Maine where you will use archaeology to learn how people lived in the past. Working alongside archaeologists, you’ll excavate and recover artifacts at a Native American site to help us discover what people did there long ago.

Evening lectures and hands-on lab workshops will give you background information on Maine archaeology, identifying artifacts and Native American history. Evening programs include: an overview of Maine archaeology, identifying and analyzing Native American pottery, identifying animal food bones and how stone tools are made.

The information gathered during field schools is shared with researchers, Native Americans and the public through publications, lectures and exhibitions.

Field School Testimonials:

“I know that each of the students had different reasons for coming to field school; mine basically was to make sure that archaeology was indeed something that I liked and wanted to pursue, not just a passing interest. The question was answered quite easily for me in Maine. …It was truly appreciated and made a difference for me.”
– Sarah, University of Rochester

“I learned an incredible amount, especially during the field excavations! I could have continued digging for weeks.”
– Zusa, Sullivan, Maine

“Just letting you know I had a wonderful experience with your field school. I feel very confident that archaeology is the career path I would like to pursue.”
Beth, Minnesota State

“It was a dream opportunity come true.”
Amanda, Clayton Lake, Maine
