Uncle Sam
Ash basket made by Theresa
Neptune Gardner, Passamaquoddy
28 cm high x 11.5 cm diameter
Theresa Neptune Gardner could weave
anything from a few splints of brown ash and sweetgrass.
She made this whimsical basket as a gift for the Abbe
Museum in 1997. Theresa (1935-2004) was a master basketmaker
and a member of a family of celebrated basketmakers.
This sculptural piece is actually
three baskets stacked one atop the other. Using this
same form, Theresa made Santa Claus baskets as well.
