Wounaan and Embera Baskets

From the collection of Chuck & Pat McLure

paddle art

Palm fiber, coil construction, each approximately 6" diameter

These contemporary pictorial baskets are the work of indigenous artists from the Darien Region of Panama.  Exquisitely crafted, the covered coil baskets are woven with palm fibers colored with natural dyes made from native vegetation.  Chuck and Pat work on projects in the rainforest and purchase baskets directly from the weavers.

An exhibit at the Abbe Museum in 2007 featured the McLure's collection, and compared Panamanian baskets to Wabanaki baskets- both of which are very important parts of the culture and economy of the Native communities who create these masterpieces.
