Friday, July 11, 10:00-11:00 AM Spirit of Katahdin Drum Group at the Abbe Museum in Acadia National Park. This spirited drum group of Wabanaki girls, ages 8-10, has performed throughout the state. Spirit of Katahdin will sing and drum traditional Wabanaki songs, as well as contemporary pieces.

Friday, July 18, 11:00AM-1:00PM Burnurwurbskek Singers This traditional Wabanaki men’s drumming and singing group will perform outside at the Abbe’s Sieur de Monts location, in Acadia National Park. Join us for a lively performance and an opportunity to talk with these talented Native musicians. Free.

 

Friday, July 25, 11:00AM-1:00 PM Birchbark Demonstration at the Abbe Museum Downtown Bar Harbor. Master weaver, birch bark artist, and root club carver, Eric Otter Bacon (Passamaquoddy) will demonstrate weaving and etching birch bark. Visitors may ask questions of this young, contemporary artist who uses traditional Wabanaki materials, techniques, and designs, to create new forms and combinations in his baskets and artwork. Free with Admission.

 

Friday, August 1, 11:00AM-2:00 PM Beadwork Demonstration at the Abbe Museum in Acadia National Park. Beadwork artist Wilma M. Shay (Diné) will demonstrate various beadworking styles. Visitors can watch Wilma work, or try lane, spot, and loom stitches under her careful eye.  Wilma will have simple projects available for visitors to complete and take home with them. Free.

 

Friday, August 15, 1:00-3:00PM Atlatl Throwing Demonstration/Contest at the Abbe Museum in Acadia National Park. Atlatl experts Bob and Cheryll Berg will teach visitors the techniques needed to throw an atlatl, a spear that pre-dates the bow and arrow and was used to extend the length of the thrower’s arm to provide greater distance and force.  Safe fun for all ages; an atlatl can fly further and with more accuracy then a javelin. Bob and Cheryll will also demonstrate the art of preparing flax for spinning and cordage and talk about the usefulness of this important tool. Free.

 

Friday, August 22, 10:00AM-1:00PM Hawk Henries Flute Demonstration at the Abbe Museum Downtown Bar Harbor. Visit with artist and musician Hawk Henries (Nipmuc) as he demonstrates the fine art of flute making.  Watch and ask questions as Hawk creates his exquisite Native flutes using only hand tools and fire.  Hawk will also sing songs, tell stories and play his beautiful flutes on Saturday, August 23. Free with Admission.
