Volunteer Opportunities at the Abbe
abbe museum
Abbe volunteer Peggy Hobbs helps out with membership mailings.

There are many opportunities for Volunteers at the Abbe Museum. Becoming a Museum volunteer can be a rewarding experience, offering personal enrichment, increased knowledge of the Native Cultures of Maine, and an opportunity to develop new skills and meet new friends with similar interests. At the same time, volunteers strengthen the Museum and play an active role in its success.

Volunteer Opportunities Include:

• Host/Hostess – welcomes and greets visitors

• Admission/Shop – customer service and sales

• Bakers – for special events and functions
• Tour Guides
• Mailing – prepare, label, seal and stamp envelopes
• Buildings & Grounds – help with upkeep
• Collections – cleaning and care
• Development – promote/gather outside support

• Education – program development
• Hospitality – prepare for special functions

• Events – prepare for special events
• Volunteers – help schedule volunteers
• Auctions & Fundraisers – help organize

For more detailed information on each type of opportunity, please download our Volunteer Application (PDF) or email the Volunteer Coordinator.

The benefits of volunteering are many. Studies show that people who volunteer live longer, healthier and happier lives:

• It provides a way to be useful, help others, and do good deeds.
• The work is enjoyable and makes one feel needed.
• Volunteerism is good for the heart. It increases your self-esteem and competence as well as lessens stress.

As Winston Churchill said, "You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give."
