Stan Neptune, Penobscot


Stan Neptune, of Passadumkeag, is a member of the Penobscot Nation, and a traditional carver of ceremonial root clubs. Stan was born on Indian Island, where he has lived for over 50 years. After serving in the Army for two years, Stan traveled and attended traditional Native American gatherings throughout the northeast and Canada. Stan apprenticed with Penobscot elder Senabeh, carving birch root clubs, walking sticks, canes and totem poles. He has received many awards including the Maine Arts Commission 2007 Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Award, and recognition from the National Park Service, Heritage Preservation Services.
