Max "Sanipass" Romero, Mi’kmaq/Laguna and Taos Pueblo

Max Romero is the grandson of Mary Sanipass and the late Donald Sanipass, renowned Mi'kmaq basketmakers. Max received a BFA from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. His ash basketry version of a tea set with cups, teapot and tray won the Standards Award in Textiles and Basketry at the 2007 Santa Fe Indian Market.

Taqnn means paddle in Mi’kmaq. Max says, "Today the canoe and the paddle are symbols of our past and because of that it is a constant reminder of who we were and who we are today. I wanted to incorporate two other significant forms of Wabanaki survival, [basketry and beadwork]."
