A Passamaquoddy Medicine Bag sits atop Bear Rock as an 'Offering' to the spirits at 'Picture Rocks' on Machias Bay. Behind the red bag, the famous 'Picture Rocks' can be seen. These rocks are part of the largest known petroglyph site on the east coast and were documented as early as the mid 1800's by the Smithsonian (they date back to as early as 3000+ years ago). Interestingly, 6 months after the land on which these Rocks sit was returned to the Passamaquoddy as a most sacred site, the huge Bear Rock split open into several pieces to reveal a turtle and arrowhead pointing directly to the 'Picture Rock.'
