The Abbe Museum marked its 80th anniversary with a celebration of creativity with the return of Paddle Art! Canoe paddles were painted, sculpted, beaded, collaged, and otherwise embellished and transformed by artists were on exhibition at the Abbe Museum from July 10 through August 13.
Thirty-one invited artists each created unique art works from poplar canoe paddles. The artworks featured landscapes, fishing scenes, wildlife, and abstract designs, as well as traditional Native American basketry and beadwork in a variety of stylistic approaches.
The Paddle Art! evening began with appetizers, wine and a silent auction of small paddles (30 inches long), wonderful Wabanaki artwork and themed gift bags. Then the party moved to our backyard for a feast of Native-inspired foods, music and live auction.
