FREE Childrens Birch Bark Workshop

Children of all ages will make a birch bark etched medallion with David Moses Bridges, Passamaquoddy. David will tell stories and provide materials and inspiration so each child can create their very own birch bark art. For more info contact Astra Haldeman, Museum Educator at (207)288-3519 or

2010 Native American Festival & Basket Makers Market

Join us for the 12th the annual Native American Festival and Basket Makers Market. This popular festival, sponsored by the Maine Indian Basket Makers Alliance and the Abbe Museum is hosted on the campus of the College of the Atlantic and offers visitors, collectors and gallery owners the opportunity to buy directly from the artists, as quality and authenticity is the hallmark for this Indian Market.  For many visitors, this is a rare opportunity to meet the artists and learn about contemporary Indian arts and cultures from Maine and the Maritimes.

Join us for our annual fund raising dinner auction!

Like last year, this event will be held at the Bar Harbor Club to benefit the Abbe Museum’s initiatives and mission to inspire new learning about the Wabanaki Nations with every visit. New to this year's gala will be an online auction component, allowing you to view and bid on the wonder art pieces which have been so graciously donated by local and regional artisans and crafts people. The online auction will go live before the night of the gala. Stay tuned for that date!

Burnurwurbskek Singers Performance

Burnurwurbskek Singers- This traditional Wabanaki men’s drumming and singing group will perform outside at the Abbe’s Sieur de Monts location, in Acadia National Park. Join us for a lively performance and an opportunity to talk with these talented Native musicians.(Weather permitting, in bad weather, the group will perform at our Downtown Bar Harbor location). Sponsored by the Maine Arts Commission

Fancy Basket Workshop with

Molly Neptune Parker, Passamaquoddy

10:00 - 4:00 both days

Molly Neptune Parker, Passamaquoddy, is an

award-winning basket maker and experienced teacher. Participants will learn to process the some materials needed to make an ash and sweet grass fancy basket, use a mold to weave a basket with a lid, and use colored ash to make decorative curls on their baskets. Participants will leave with a beautiful basket of their own creation, and memories to last a lifetime!
