School Programs: An Orientation

Booking a class with the Abbe Museum is a great way for teachers to meet the requirements of LD 291, the Wabanaki Initiative, and the Maine Learning Results in a fun and dynamic setting.

Whether school groups come to the Museum, or Abbe educators come to your classroom, all programs offer hands-on, objects based learning opportunities for students of all ages. Our programs can be adjusted to fit almost any age group, and include teacher’s guides with pre and post-visit activities.

Visiting the Abbe

Most programs take place in our downtown Bar Harbor location, offering students the opportunity to learn from the exhibits, as well as with objects. Programs are available by reservation, year-round, Monday through Friday. Teachers can also arrange a visit to our Sieur de Monts location in Acadia National Park. This is the original 1928 trailside museum, which offers a close look at how Native people in Maine lived prior to European contact through the artifacts they left behind. This small facility can accommodate groups of 10-15 students at one time. For larger groups, the Abbe can assist teachers with coordinating other activities in the area. Sieur de Monts is open late May through October; the exact dates vary, so please call ahead.

Fees

• Downtown Museum visit: $3.00/student

• Classroom visit: $3.00/student plus mileage at $.48/mile (lunch and accommodations if necessary)

• Sieur de Monts: $.50/student

• Minimum Fee: $30

• Chaperones are always free!

Our Programs

All Abbe Museum programs compliment each other, and teachers can plan a series of visits to develop a structured curriculum based on grade level and interest. Abbe Museum educators are happy to work with teachers, schools, or districts to help facilitate this arrangement. All programs stand alone, so teachers are free to select a program based on their curriculum needs and grade level. All programs can be used to meet Maine Learning Results and LD 291 requirements and generally last two hours (classroom visits, storytelling, and Basket Comparisons last one hour). Programs engage students through questions and discovery, free time to explore, and hands-on activities.
