Pam outdusis “Little Pathway” Cunningham is a Penobscot Indian Master Basket Weaver from the Turtle Clan. She was raised on Oak Hill, Indian Island, Maine, and was given her traditional name for the path she carved by walking between her home and that of a friend’s. Cunningham has been a member of the Maine Indian Basket Makers’ Alliance (MIBA) Board of Directors and has been Chair-Lady of the Penobscot Indian Nation Cultural and Historic Preservation Committee. She still resides on Indian Island, where she uses traditional practices of weaving ash by hand, and braiding sweetgrass to make baskets on the banks of the Penobscot River.
“I love every aspect, every step of my basket making. I relish the fact that, in most ways, I am following in the footsteps of my ancestors. These baskets symbolize my desire to keep native traditions and culture alive.”
