Moose Call
Butch Phillips, Penobscot

Birch bark, sweetgrass, twine
"This call is made of the "winter bark" of white birch tree. Most of the call is etched with traditional Penobscot and Wabanaki "double curve" and floral designs. In addition to the traditional designs, I have added most of the Penobscot family "totems." The etching is done by wetting and scraping away the brown rind to allow the white to show thus creating the design."
"If we listen to the songs of the water
and the whispers on the wind,
we will feel the heartbeat of Mother Earth
and all of creation will continue to breathe."
Birch bark artist and canoe builder Butch Phillips, Penobscot, was born and raised on Indian Island. He attended school on the Penobscot Reservation until 5th grade and then went to Old Town High School. Following graduation, he served with the United States Army. Butch Phillips has devoted his life to speaking engagements at middle schools, high schools, colleges, historical societies and civic groups, and also to leading hunting and fishing expeditions. Mr. Phillips hopes that his talks will help audiences gain an understanding of Penobscot ways and how the Penobscot Nation tradition as hunters and gatherers can help individuals lead more harmonious lives respectful of the land, its creatures and its bounty.
